Crofton and Sparrow Woods — Topographical, Hydrographic & Bathymetric Survey

Cura Surveys carried out a combined topographical, hydrographic and bathymetric survey at Crofton and Sparrow Woods, capturing detailed land and watercourse information within a challenging woodland and river environment.

The project required accurate survey data across varied ground conditions, including wooded areas, riverbanks and water features. By combining land survey methods with hydrographic and bathymetric techniques, Cura Surveys provided a coordinated survey package suitable for design review, environmental assessment and project planning.

This project demonstrates our ability to deliver specialist survey data in locations where standard survey methods alone are not enough.

Project Requirements

The client required accurate existing-site information across both land and water environments.

The survey scope included:

  • Topographical survey data
  • Hydrographic survey information
  • Bathymetric survey data
  • River and watercourse features
  • Woodland ground levels
  • Bank lines and surrounding site features
  • Survey control
  • CAD survey deliverables
  • Existing-condition data for design and review

For woodland and river projects, survey data needs to capture both the visible land features and the below-water profile where required.

Survey Methodology

Cura Surveys used a combination of topographical survey equipment, GNSS, total station methods and water-based survey techniques to capture the required information.

The land survey recorded ground levels, visible features, banks, access areas and surrounding constraints. The hydrographic and bathymetric survey elements helped capture watercourse and bed-level information, giving the project team a more complete understanding of the site.

This combined approach allowed land and water survey data to be delivered as one coordinated package.

Key Challenges

Woodland and watercourse environments can be difficult to survey due to access, vegetation, safety and changing ground conditions.

Key challenges included:

  • Dense woodland and vegetation
  • River and watercourse access
  • Irregular bank lines and ground levels
  • Combining land and water survey data
  • Maintaining survey control in difficult terrain
  • Working safely near and around water
  • Producing clear CAD outputs from complex site data

This project shows Cura Surveys’ ability to adapt survey methods to the environment rather than relying on one standard approach.

Deliverables

Cura Surveys provided:

  • Topographical survey drawings
  • Hydrographic survey information
  • Bathymetric survey data
  • River and bank survey information
  • Site level data
  • CAD survey drawings
  • Existing-condition survey information
  • Coordinated land and water survey data

Why This Project Matters

Crofton and Sparrow Woods demonstrates Cura Surveys’ specialist capability in surveying complex natural environments.

It shows our experience in:

  • Woodland topographical surveys
  • River and watercourse surveys
  • Hydrographic survey methods
  • Bathymetric survey data
  • Difficult access and outdoor environments
